"The Victor and the Vanquished"

"The Victor and the Vanquished" Bronze limited edition of 25. 23 1/2" long by 9 1/2' wide by 12" high. 2400.00 issue price. In 2010 my son Joseph and I were bow hunting elk in the Bighorn Mountains here in Wyoming. We got into a large herd that had a really big bull bugling for all he was worth near the last days of our hunt in late September.

That night while camping we listened to this big guy, he had a very distinct bugle, and other smaller bulls screaming away all night long. Late the next day I "cow talked" a smaller five point bull into archery range and took the shot.

That huge bull was always surrounded and protected by lots of cow elk that spooked at anything. I backed off after my shot as it was quite a hike back to camp and I was not sure I made a good hit on the him. Joe and I were back on the trail before light the next day.

When we were about 500 yards from where I had made the shot on the five pointer Joe pointed into the woods and said "there's your bull!" It was a nice six by six antlered bull uphill from where I had made the shot at the five pointer? The ground and smaller trees all around it were all torn up. Two large holes exactly where I show them on this sculpture were in its body. I told Joe "this is not the bull I shot, this bull has been killed by another bull in a fight last night."

We went to the place I had shot and blood trailed my bull, it had only gone about 75 yards in heavy timber and died. So we packed out two bull elk that day! Joe tagged the "first" bull.
